VPN Technology includes the following: Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) - standard protocol used for establishing direct connections between two network nodes, often used for dial-up connections. Used by PPTP to allow authentication along with providing encryption of data. This technology is not able to leave the network on its own, i.e, not routable. Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) - Utilizes PPP. Allows data from PPP to travel/leave a network. Very easy to setup and is compatible with most devices with the caveat being that it has weak encryption compared to alternatives. Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) - Encrypts data using the existing internet protocol (IP) framework. IPSec is more difficult to setup compared to other solutions. However, it offers strong encryption along with being supported by many devices.
